Voluntary Protection Program

Voluntary Protection Program

Holding true to Mr. McWane’s philosophy, our outstanding safety team, under the leadership of Vice President Mickey Hannum , has propelled our company to industry-leading safety performance. We all share the motto “Do it Safely, or Not at All!”

As McWane, Inc. continues to emphasize safety and health, we are actively participating in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's VPP. The program emphasis a cooperative relationship with management, labor and OSHA while working to implement comprehensive safety and health management systems.

Approval into VPP is OSHA's official recognition of the outstanding efforts of employers and employees who have achieved exemplary occupational safety and health programs. "The VPP designation indicates a true commitment from management and team members in working together, with everyone taking personal responsibility for safety and health," said Barbara Wisniewski, Vice President of Health and Safety, McWane. Inc.

There are two types of OSHA VPP designations. VPP Merit sites are those with cooperative management and union relationships exhibiting exemplary health and safety programs, but whose injury rates are not yet consistently below industry averages. VPP Star sites have exemplary health and safety programs, cooperative partnerships and have consistently demonstrated injury rates below the industry averages.

McWane facilities that have been recognized as VPP sites to date are:

The Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) is determined by taking the number of incidents occurred in a year’s period which require medical treatment, restricted work activity, or lost time and multiplying that by 200,000 and dividing by the total number of hours worked at the facility during the year. The Most Improved TRIR Rate is determined by calculating at year end, the TRIR rate for each of our foundries and looking at the percent improvement when compared to their previous year end TRIR. The facility with the greatest percentage of improvement from the previous year is given the award.

The same process as noted above is done for all other facilities which are not considered a foundry and the award is given for the most improved over their previous year’s rate.

Ergo Cup

McWane Ergo Cup

The McWane Ergo Cup competition is held annually. The mission, should you choose to accept it, is to reduce and prevent work place injuries … it is not an impossible mission.

The commitment to safety shown by our team members, on behalf of each other and McWane, is inspiring.

Barb Wisniewski

Teams from McWane facilities around the country present ergonomic-related projects they have implemented within the last 24 months to a panel of health and safety experts. Each project is aimed at reducing injuries, while improving workplace efficiency and transforming processes to best fit the needs of our team members.

“The commitment to safety shown by our team members, on behalf of each other and McWane, is inspiring,” said Barb Wisniewski, Vice President Health and Safety. “This is a perfect example of the McWane Way in action."

Ergonomics is the science of fitting workplace conditions and job demands to the capabilities of the working population. This emphasizes the implementation of industry and task-specific guidelines for reducing and preventing workplace musculoskeletal disorders and other injuries.

Each year, every project is judged on measurable outcomes such as return on investment, quantified reduction of injury and reduced workers' compensation costs, among other factors. The successes from these projects are then implemented at other McWane facilities with similar operations to further reduce injury risks company wide.

Good luck to our team members!

Pollution Prevention Challenge

Pollution Prevention Challenge

The Art of Preventing Pollution Before it Begins

The best way to deal with pollution is to prevent it from being created in the first place. This means finding new efficiencies, doing things smarter and valuing every resource.

Each December, the McWane Pollution Prevention Challenge (P2C) contest brings together teams from across the McWane family of companies to have their ideas judged for innovation, simplicity, cost savings, and environmental benefits. Since the inaugural competition in 2011, those ideas have generated more than $19 million in company wide savings.

The P2C competition has changed the way we think, and has served as the hallmark of our efforts toward sustainability and environmental stewardship.

ISO & State Certifications

ISO & State Certifications

McWane’s EMS is based on the principles of ISO 14001 and EPA’s Compliance Focused EMS, and all McWane manufacturing facilities are required to implement the EMS.

While it is not a McWane requirement, some McWane facilities have elected to seek ISO 14001 registration and/or equivalent recognition from their state environmental agencies (see below). Obtaining these registrations has been a simple process since the McWane EMS meets and, in many cases, exceeds the criteria for ISO 14001 and equivalent state registration.
